Safe Routes To Schools $1,200,000 Grant Update

July 2023:The Borough of Haddon Heights as part of the Safe Routes to School Program, was awarded a grant for $1.2 million dollars for the installation of missing sidewalks throughout the borough. The Borough of Haddon Heights’ opted to utilize the NJDOT Safe Routes to School Program and its Design Assistance Consultant pool for design work. Earlier this year, interviews were conducted with approved firms and the decision was made to utilize NV5 for the design and construction support services for our Missing Sidewalk Project. During the summer of 2023, the Borough, NV5, and the NJDOT held a project kick-off meeting and the scoping field view meeting. The next steps will be for NV5 to submit their scope and enter a contract with the Borough and NJDOT. At that point, the survey can begin and then the design can commence. Some key points:

  • We will not have information about specific properties until the survey and right-of-way are established. The goal is to construct the sidewalk within the borough’s existing right-of-way.
  • Construction is not anticipated to begin for 1-2 years pending the permitting process.
  • Public involvement will be key to the progress of this project, Council will update the website regularly with design & project status. If you should have more detailed questions, please reach out to Councilwoman Kate Russo at krusso@haddonhts.com.

Project History: The Haddon Heights School Travel Plan was published in conjunction with Cross County Connections, the Haddon Heights Safe Routes to School Volunteer Group, the Haddon Heights Police Department, the Haddon Heights School District, and the NJ Safe Routes to School Program in June 2018. The Travel Plan identifies locations with missing sidewalks on Page 16 (link below). The Haddon Heights Safe Routes to School Group, the Engineering Committee, Police Department, Council, and the Mayor are pleased to have funding to provide a complete sidewalk network for pedestrians to access our schools.
